s 2008 spring semester, ID KAIST has organized an International Seminar ‘CATCH THE FUTURE 2008’ on Emerging Design Research with five invited international specialists and it was successfully finished on May 6 at Creative Learning Hall in KAIST. The Last IDKAIST ‘Catch the Future 2008’ Seminar lecturer was Professor Lin-Lin Chen from college of design, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taiwan. She has been Dean of NTUST Design College since 2004 and, before that, worked as an Assistant Professor position at Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Iowa State University and Graduate Institute of Engineering, NTUST. She also has served as editor-in-chief of International Journal of Design and executive board member of International Association of Societies of Design Research. (IASDR) The subject of her lecture was “Computer-Aided Concept Exploration & Evaluation” Summary of lecture: In a saturated market where abundant products offer similar functionality, quality, and usability, a successful product must communicate to and evoke specific emotional responses from target consumers. By combining image morphing techniques from computer graphics and perceptual mapping techniques from marketing and psychology research, we developed a set of computer-based tools for synthesizing new product shapes with specific emotional characteristics. Such morphing techniques allow designers to easily experiment with a large number of product shapes during the concept design stage, by combining existing products that are successful in communicating certain affective meaning.
