IDKAIST Spring Seminar - Tom Barker

On March 18, the second IDKAIST ‘Catch the Future 2008’ Seminar lecturer was Professor Tom Barker from Royal College of Art (RCA), based in the innovative department of Industrial Design Engineering (IDE). Tom has worked as a designer for 20 years in the fields of technology, products, and architectural design. His philosophy is based on continuous learning and embraces innovation, technology and sustainability. The subject of his lecture was “How to Invent! Advanced Industrial Design & Technology” Summary of lecture As companies increasingly compete in giant global markets, innovation and design gains greater value than ever before. The role of the designer has become pivotal to a company’s success. Good design gives competitive advantage and builds brand value. However, the process of designing truly innovative products that succeed in the marketplace has always been a difficult and risky task. How can the contemporary designer respond to the new challenges? In this lecture, Professor Tom Barker from the Royal College of Art’s IDE department in the school of Architecture and Design, discusses the design innovation methods that he has pioneered both in his professional life and in the MA teaching programme. These are illustrated by a selection of comprehensive project videos that reveal the processes used to achieve real innovation.
