On February 16, IDKAIST student Jihoon Kim, Ph.D. (supervised by Professor Myung-suk Kim) received a bronze prize at the 16th international design competition at Osaka International Convention Center sponsored by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan. The 2007 competition had the main theme of "robot" with sub-themes of "GAIA", "Social places," and "Individual places." 18 finalists were invited to participate in a workshop in order to present their work to 150 business representatives in Japan. In addition, individual business match making meetings were held between finalists and interested business representatives. Osaka international design competition is an annual/biennial event organized by Japan Design Foundation rooting from 1983 and is considered one of the most prestigious design competitions. Jihoon Kim won the prize for designing an OSP (Oil Spill Protection) robot that can control oil spill accidents in marine environment through autonomous collaborative control. In addition he received an IF product design award in January 2008 for the advanced studies category for design of industrial monitoring equipment.
