The Ratchair prototype won the prestigious Digital Content Expo Prize

The Ratchair prototype, currently demonstrated at Siggraph 2016 in Anaheim, won the prestigious Digital Content Expo Prize and will be showcased in Tokyo later this year.

RatChair, furniture that learns to move itself by vibration, is developed in the team of professor Daniel Saakes. It entails a strategy for displacing big objects by attaching relatively small vibration sources. After learning how several random bursts of vibration affect its pose, an optimization algorithm discovers the optimal sequence of vibration patterns required to (slowly but surely) move the object to a specified position.
