On June 28 (Fri), Dr. Yongkwan Kim from the Department of Industrial Design presented a 3D sketching performance at the opening ceremony of the BK21 20th Anniversary Symposium (jointly hosted by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation) held in COEX, Seoul.
The 15 minute-long performance titled "飛上 (Lift Off)" was watched by over 1,000 government and university officials including Ms. Eun-hae Yoo, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education of Korea. Using a digital pen and tablet, Dr. Kim drew various 3D aircraft taking off into the sky, in recognition of the bright future of talented researchers whose excellence characterized the 20 years of history of the BK21 program.
Dr. Kim said, "with the support of the BK21 program, I was able to promote my research to the industry and academia," and "I hope fellow researchers will continue to benefit from the program."
Dr. Kim, currently a postdoctoral researcher at SketchLab (Prof. Seok-Hyung Bae), Department of Industrial Design, KAIST, received the BK21 Plus Excellent Researcher Award from the Deputy Prime Minister in 2017 for his outstanding research that utilized hand posture information for 3D sketching. Dr. Kim earned his Ph.D. in Industrial Design from KAIST in August 2018 and, in the same year, received the Best Paper Award at the ACM CHI international conference for his work on the technology that combined hand motion with 3D sketching.
